ABOUT DE OPSTAL
Welcome to De Opstal Country Lodge in
the picturesque Schoemanshoek Valley. De Opstal is just
12 km from Oudtshoorn on the main road (R328) to the
world famous Cango Caves. It is also within easy reach
of tourist attractions such as the Cango Wildlife Ranch
and the Cango Ostrich Show Farm.
The Lodge consists of a group of typical Little Karoo
farm buildings, beautifully restored and fitted with
modern conveniences, set in lush, tranquil garden
surroundings. The complex has a swimming pool and a
rustic restaurant where traditional breakfasts and
hearty farm-style dinners are served.

The entire complex has an old world ambience with
subtle modern touches which ensure a luxurious stay.
The old stables, old wagon house, old farmhouse,
share cropper's cottage, old barn and bungalow have been
lovingly restored by hosts Albertus and Matilda de Bod
and furnished tastefully with antiques, Cape cottage
furniture, Victoriana and heirlooms from the Schoeman
family of which Matilda is a member. The tasteful
interiors, together with the unique Little Karoo
hospitality and personal attention to detail and guests'
whims offered by Albertus and Matilda, create an
atmosphere of intimacy and homeliness that makes one
welcome immediately.
HISTORY
The Schoemanshoek Valley, in which De Opstal Country
Lodge is set, is named after Matilda de Bod's family.
For generations the Schoeman family farmed tabacco,
fruit, vegetables and ostriches in this fertile valley.
Matilda is the eight generation Schoeman living in the
valley. The beautiful farm house, stables and milking
parlour date back to 1830. All the buildings in the
complex have been creatively converted into modern,
quaint en suite bedrooms with the retention of an
atmosphere of rustic charm. The terracotta floors, heavy
wooden doors and shutters and wide timber ceilings bear
the scars, buckles and blemishes of generations of use
and give the entire complex an authentic feel. In this
relaxed atmosphere Albertus and Matilda treat their
guests to wholesome country hospitality and food,
reminiscent of the bygone era of the 1800's.
FOOD AND DINING

Hearty farm style breakfasts are served in the
spacious restaurant, which is also decorated in a style
similar to the rest of the complex. There is a bar area
for pre-dinner relaxing. A four-course dinner is served
and consists of a set menu containing tastefully
prepared regional and ostrich meat dishes. Matilda is
also prepared to supply guests with picnic lunches on
request.
