A hearty welcome to De Oude Meul Country Estate and Game farm. We are situated in the beautiful Schoemanspoort, halfway between Oudtshoorn and the world famous Cango Caves on the R328. To overnight on this beautiful farm is an unforgettable experience. The lodge is surrounded by mountains, which together with the exotic plants of the Klein Karoo create a quiet serene atmosphere.
The gardens and lawns, growing in the fertile red clay ground of this valley are a feast for the eye; a huge bonus for the tired tourist. Many a tourist has told the owners Boy and Marianne that they will never go to heaven, because they're already living in paradise!
The Grobbelaars river meanders through the farm and seldom runs dry. Beautiful willow trees grow on the banks, and together with the mountains nestling around you, this tranquil picture promotes the peaceful atmosphere of this luscious valley. This is what makes your visit unforgettably special and makes you want to return. THE ROOMS
Boy was born on the farm, and because he was enchanted with this beautiful valley of his, it became his dream to build a guesthouse so he could share this splendid beauty with others. In 1995 he built six rooms. Only a year later another six rooms as well as a restaurant was built. In 2002 he built an additional 12 rooms and expanded the restaurant to accommodate 50 guests.
The rooms are comfortably furnished with an honesty bar, heater, fan, clock-radio, coffee and tea facilities, and a bathroom with a shower. Each room has a veranda with a table and chairs where the guests can relax, enjoy nature and the animals. Our facilities consist of a family room with a queen size double bed and twin beds in one, cosy room. The rest are 4 rooms with double / queen size beds and 18 twin bedded rooms. WINING AND DINING Dinner is one of the hallmarks of the Oude Meul. A residence bar and dining room offers grilled ostrich fillet and traditional South African cuisine. Here you may enjoy a four-course meal served with fresh local vegetables. The best local wines are also available. The tables are tastefully decorated with flowers and candles, and with dimmed lights and soft music in the background we create the ideal atmosphere for an enjoyable evening. Boy and Marianne are your hosts and they will always look after your comfort and wellbeing. They will ascertain that you feel at home and that your every need is catered for. HIKING
The mountains right behind the guesthouse is a nice challenge. If you are fit it should take you approximately 45 minutes to reach the top, otherwise one hour. So, expect an average of two hours for a round trip. Because the climb is steep and scattered with loose stones, comfortable shoes and a walking stick is recommended. We provide walking sticks. A breath-taking view over Oudtshoorn district makes the trail worth while. The mountain-flora flourish in rock-hard soil, but is nevertheless a feast for any nature lover. Oudtshoorn is one of the areas with the biggest variety of vegetation in the country. The indigenous plants are semi-dessert growth which means they can survive long periods of time without water. Sometimes you could even find a little specimen in small rock-crevice or a dried-up stream. Geraniums are one of the species that has been discovered here in the Klein Karoo and spread to the rest of the world. THE GARDENS
Take a walk and relax in our beautifully kept, serene gardens.
Glide on the dam in a little row boat, enjoy drinks at our bar, take a dip in the pool, or enjoy the unspoilt nature and beautiful surroundings. THE FARM
In the past mixed farming was practised. Boy's father cultivated tobacco for the Spies Tobacco Factory. They also grew their own vegetables, some apricot trees and had a dairy farm. But times have changed since; the tobacco factory closed down and the Co-op for fruit and milk does not exist anymore. The 1900's were golden years for ostrich farming. Between 400-800 birds were raised on the farm; varying from one day to 4 months old, but this also presented its own risks. At the moment the farm is fenced in for Game Farming. The first game has recently arrived on the farm and you are able to view wildlife from the comfort of your own room.
THE MILL
The old mill from which the farm obtained its name is still on the farm, and is one of the only surviving mills in the region. Because these mills were built of yellow wood, which is very valuable, people took it apart and sold the wood. The mill was productive until 1950; all the wheat in the valley was milled here. Today it would cost a pretty penny to restore the mill to its former glory.
Our Old Mill has changed into a beautiful Restaurant, with the mill still inside.
Situated on our farm, it brings you the atmosphere of relaxation, while being surrounded by tamed game and a river crossing through.
